Biblical Meaning

The author of Hebrews gives the Bible's only formal definition of faith: it is not wishful thinking or blind optimism, but substance and evidence. The Greek 'hypostasis' (substance) literally means 'that which stands under', a foundation, a title deed. Faith is the title deed to your future inheritance. 'Elegchos' (evidence) is a legal term meaning proof, conviction, or demonstration in court. Faith is not vague. It is legally substantial.

Life in Biblical Times

Greek philosophy valued what could be observed and reasoned. The concept of faith as 'evidence' would have been provocative to Hellenistic thinkers who demanded empirical proof. The author bridges two worldviews by giving faith the weight of legal evidence.

Theological Significance

This verse transforms faith from a feeling into a faculty, a way of perceiving reality that goes beyond the five senses. It establishes that the invisible realm (God, heaven, promises) is not less real than the visible world. It is more real and more permanent.
