Do Not Fear

Isaiah 41:10: Meaning & Verse Study

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)

Biblical Meaning

God gives a double command, do not fear, do not be dismayed, and backs it with four promises: I am with you, I am your God, I will strengthen you, I will help and uphold you. Fear is answered not with a pep talk but with God's personal presence and active commitment.

Historical Context

Isaiah spoke these words of comfort to Israel facing exile and the threat of powerful enemies. God reassures His people that despite their weakness, He Himself would sustain them.

Original Language (Greek & Hebrew)

The Hebrew 'tamak' (uphold) means to grasp, hold firmly, sustain. The 'right hand' symbolizes power and authority. God does not offer a distant rescue. He holds us with His own strong hand.

Life in Biblical Times

Facing the might of Babylon, Israel felt small and helpless. God's promise to personally strengthen and uphold them countered the despair of the powerless.

Theological Significance

This verse grounds courage in God's covenant relationship. Because He is 'thy God,' His presence and power are personally pledged to His people, transforming fear into confident trust.

How to Apply It

When fear whispers that you are alone and overwhelmed, answer it with this promise. You are not facing today by yourself. The God of the universe is holding you up with His own hand.

Did You Know?

The Bible contains some form of 'fear not' hundreds of times, often paired with the reason 'for I am with you.' God's antidote to fear is consistently His presence.
