Biblical Meaning

John opens his Gospel by reaching back before creation itself. The 'Word' is Jesus, and John makes three staggering claims in one sentence: the Word already existed in the beginning, the Word was in relationship with God, and the Word was Himself God. This is the clearest statement in Scripture of Christ's eternal deity.

Historical Context

John wrote his Gospel near the end of the first century, when false teachings denying Jesus' full divinity were spreading. He countered them head-on by anchoring Jesus' identity in eternity past.

Original Language (Greek & Hebrew)

The Greek 'Logos' (Word) carried rich meaning for both Jews (God's creative, revealing speech) and Greeks (the rational principle behind the universe). John tells both audiences: the Logos you have been searching for is a person, Jesus.

Life in Biblical Times

Greek philosophers spoke endlessly of the Logos as an impersonal force. John's claim that the Logos became a specific Jewish man named Jesus would have been shocking to a first-century Greek mind.

Theological Significance

This verse is foundational to the doctrine of the Trinity. The Word was 'with' God (distinct in person) and 'was' God (equal in essence). Jesus is not a created being or a lesser god. He is fully God from eternity.

How to Apply It

The One who spoke galaxies into existence knows your name and entered your world. When Jesus feels distant, remember: He is not a recent idea or a religious invention. He is the eternal God who chose to come near.

John deliberately echoes the opening words of Genesis 1:1, 'In the beginning.' Where Genesis begins the story of creation, John begins the story of the new creation, with the same Author.
