The Great Commission

Matthew 28:19: Meaning & Verse Study

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.Matthew 28:19 (KJV)

Biblical Meaning

Known as the Great Commission, this is Jesus' final command to His disciples: make disciples everywhere. It is not a suggestion for a few but a mission for all His followers, to spread the good news, baptize new believers, and teach them to obey Christ.

Historical Context

Jesus gave this command after His resurrection, just before ascending to heaven. The disciples, once fearful and scattered, were now commissioned to take His message to the entire world.

Original Language (Greek & Hebrew)

The main verb is not 'go' but 'make disciples' (mathēteuō). The other actions, going, baptizing, teaching, describe how disciples are made. The mission centers on transformation, not mere conversion.

Life in Biblical Times

In a world divided by ethnic and religious boundaries, Jesus' command to reach 'all nations' shattered the assumption that God's blessing was limited to one people.

Theological Significance

This passage establishes the church's mission and its Trinitarian foundation. Salvation is global in scope, and discipleship, not just decision, is the goal of evangelism.

How to Apply It

The Great Commission is not only for missionaries overseas. It begins where you are, with the people God has already placed in your life. Who can you point toward Jesus this week?

Did You Know?

This verse contains one of the clearest Trinitarian formulas in Scripture, one singular 'name' shared by Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons in one God.
