Persistent Prayer
Matthew 7:7: Meaning & Verse Study
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”Matthew 7:7 (KJV)
Biblical Meaning
Jesus invites persistent, expectant prayer with three escalating images: ask, seek, knock. Each implies increasing intensity and engagement. The promise is that God responds to those who genuinely pursue Him, He is not reluctant but generous to His children.
Historical Context
This teaching is part of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus follows it by comparing God to a good father who gives good gifts, contrasting Him with even flawed human parents.
Original Language (Greek & Hebrew)
The three verbs form a memorable pattern in Greek, 'aiteō' (ask), 'zēteō' (seek), 'krouō' (knock), each picturing a deeper level of pursuit, from words, to searching, to persistent action at the door.
Life in Biblical Times
In Middle Eastern culture, hospitality meant a knock at the door would always be answered. Jesus uses this familiar custom to picture God's openness to those who come to Him.
Theological Significance
This verse teaches the responsiveness of God to prayer and the importance of persistence. It assumes a relationship in which the Father delights to give good things to those who ask.
How to Apply It
Do not give up after one prayer. Keep asking, seeking, and knocking. Persistence in prayer is not nagging God. It is expressing trust that He hears and will answer in His perfect way and time.
Did You Know?
In the original Greek, all three verbs are in the present tense, implying continuous action: keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking. Prayer is meant to be persistent, not one-time.
