Biblical Meaning

David, who was himself a shepherd before becoming king, understood exactly what it meant to call God his shepherd. A shepherd in the ancient world was entirely responsible for the life, safety, and provision of the flock. To say 'I shall not want' is not a denial of hardship. It is a declaration that under God's care, nothing essential will be lacking.

Historical Context

David spent his youth as a literal shepherd in the hills of Bethlehem, protecting sheep from lions and bears (1 Samuel 17:34-36). When he wrote this psalm, he drew on decades of firsthand experience with what a good shepherd does for his flock.

The Hebrew word 'ro'eh' (shepherd) shares its root with 're'a' (friend/companion). God is not a distant overseer. He is an intimate companion who walks with His flock. 'Echsar' (I shall not want/lack) is emphatic: with this Shepherd, I will lack absolutely nothing.

Life in Biblical Times

In the ancient Near East, kings often called themselves 'shepherds' of their people. David's radical move was to say that God, not any earthly king, was the true Shepherd of Israel.
