Delighting in God
Psalm 37:4: Meaning & Verse Study
“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”Psalm 37:4 (KJV)
Biblical Meaning
This verse is often misread as a formula for getting what we want. In truth, when we delight in God Himself, He becomes our greatest desire, and He reshapes our other desires to align with His will. The promise is not that God grants our wishes, but that He becomes our deepest joy.
Historical Context
David wrote this psalm as an older man, reflecting on a lifetime of watching the wicked prosper and the righteous struggle. His counsel: do not fret, but delight in the Lord and trust His timing.
Original Language (Greek & Hebrew)
The Hebrew 'anag' (delight) means to be soft, pliable, to take exquisite pleasure in something. To delight in God is to find Him so satisfying that His desires become your own.
Life in Biblical Times
In an agrarian society where survival was uncertain, the temptation to envy the prosperous wicked was strong. David redirects that envy toward delight in God.
Theological Significance
This verse reveals that God is not a means to an end but the end itself. As we treasure Him, our hearts are transformed so that what we want increasingly matches what He wants.
How to Apply It
Instead of asking God to fulfill your wish list, ask Him to become your delight. As you do, you will find your wants slowly reshaped, and you will discover He was the desire all along.
